Saigling Elementary School is named in honor of Charles Frederick Saigling (1840–1906), a Swiss immigrant who became one of early Plano’s most influential business and civic leaders. Saigling emigrated to the United States at the age of fourteen and moved to Plano in 1881. There, he established a lumber company and planing mill and later purchased the Plano Milling Company in 1895, producing flour and cornmeal that supported the region’s growing agricultural economy. Self-taught and fluent in seven languages, Saigling was widely respected for his intellect, business acumen, and commitment to community service. He served on the first board of Plano Independent School District from 1899 to 1902 and was also active in city leadership, including service on the Plano City Council. His efforts contributed to early infrastructure improvements and civic development in Plano.

The Saigling family remained deeply involved in the community for generations. His descendant, W.N. Saigling, continued the family’s legacy of service by serving on the Plano ISD Board of Trustees from 1963 to 1969. The family’s historic home, now known as the Saigling House, stands as a reminder of their lasting presence in the city and has been recognized for its historical significance.

Saigling Elementary School opened in 1977 at a cost of $1.1 million, during a period of rapid growth for Plano. The campus was later renovated using funds from the district’s 1996 bond program to modernize facilities and better serve students. Since its opening, the school has educated generations of Plano children and continues to reflect the pioneering spirit, civic pride, and commitment to education exemplified by its namesake.
